CLOSE to 1,000 runners are set to hit the trails around the New Forest for the return of the region’s long-running 10 Mile Race.

For the first time in two years, the New Forest 10 Mile Race will once again run through the national park when it returns on October 30 following pandemic-related and other delays.

Organised by running club New Forest Runners, the race has gone from strength to strength since it was first held in 1985 – with the upcoming event being the 35th iteration of the charity run.

In 2019, no less than 85 running clubs from across Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire and beyond were represented.

Starting and finishing at New Park, the majority of the one lap course is on a wide and firm forest track with only a two mile stretch on a closed tarmac road.

Historically the race has taken place in July, however bird nesting season means it will take place in late October this year.

While the weather may be cooler than usual, the host of volunteer marshals will be on hand as usual to direct and cheer runners around the idyllic course.

Race director Charles Fox said: “After a two-year absence due to the pandemic I am pleased to say that all the permissions we require are falling into place and we hope the return of the race will be hugely welcomed by both regular and new entrants.

“As it is our 35th running of the event, finishers will receive a commemorative technical t-shirt as well as the much loved horse brass.”

Steve Hull, chair of New Forest Runners, added: “Entries are open and at £25 the race represents extremely good value for runners. I look forward to seeing old and new faces on October 30 at New Park.”

Last year, the race was cancelled by Forestry England after it was legally unable to permit the event due to habitat regulations.

Entries can be made via the New Forest Runners website which can be found by searching newforestrunners.com/nf10 online.
