ALMOST 50 legal notices were issued to people camping on BCP beaches over the weekend.
Prior to the weekend of August 13 and 14, BCP Council warned beachgoers that overnight camping on beaches would not be tolerated and could lead to prosecution.
More byelaw signage was also posted in key locations along the coast.
Between June 7 and August 5, the council issued 70 legal notices to beach campers. Incredibly, more than half of this two-month total was reached in just two days over the weekend with the council dishing out 48 legal notices in total.
One resident reported seeing at least ten campers on the beach at Hengistbury Head over the weekend.
A council spokesperson said: “During another very busy and exceptionally hot few days in the BCP region, our seafront teams and their valued partners have been doing a fantastic job keeping our visitors and residents safe and the beaches clean.
“Given the intensity of the heat and sheer numbers of people enjoying the resort a few problems did occur, but interventions were made. In terms of beach campers, 48 legal notices were issued over the weekend.”
If those who are handed legal notices fail to give their details, the police will take action. They then risk prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.
