POLICE have branded the actions of a group of teenagers who jumped from a railway bridge into water in Christchurch as “extremely dangerous”.

Six teenagers reportedly swam across the river and climbed onto moored boats before jumping off a railway bridge into unknown water.

The incident which happened near Bailey Bridge Marina over the weekend was reported to police.

A spokesperson for Christchurch Police said: “We have had a report from the weekend that a group of six teenagers near to Bailey Bridge Marina swam across the river and were getting on various moored boats.

“The same youths were seen climbing on to the railway bridge WET and jumping off into unknown water.

“This is extremely dangerous and can lead to severe risk of injury from passing trains or jumping into unknown water.”

The spokesperson urged people to educate young people and children around the dangers of jumping into unknown water.
