FIREWORKS at Christchurch Carnival will still go ahead, after organisers considered the fire risk from the recent dry weather.

A number of precautions have been taken to ensure a fire doesn’t start, including all small sheds being removed from the display and no willow or long burning shells being used in the show.

In addition, water containers will be placed around the marsh reed bed area as back-up and a qualified diver will be around to move the pontoon before firing, should an issue arise.

A spokesperson said “careful consideration” has been given to allowing the fireworks display to go ahead and safety checks in the area will be carried out before leaving the site.

Christchurch Carnival, taking place on Saturday and Sunday (August 13 and 14) has already had to cancel the dog show due to the extreme heat.

The popular event takes place and features stalls, live music, fireworks and a funfair.

It will be the first time a parade and full carnival programme has taken place for two years, after covid cancelled previous plans.

The carnival also encourages people to donate their loose change to help raise valuable funds for Christchurch charities.
