A CHARITY held a beach clean next to Boscombe Pier at the weekend after thousands flocked to the coastline during the heatwave last week.

Sea Shepherd UK, a marine wildlife conservation organisation, organised the beach clean which took place on Saturday July 23.

The charity arranged the clean after a number of Dorset beaches faced mass littering amid the heatwave.

Bournemouth Echo:

Karen Kermode, a regional coordinator for Sea Shepherd UK, said: “Today we’re organising this because Bournemouth has been hit by loads of visitors and BCP Council bless them, they're trying their hardest but it does take volunteer groups to come along, help out and pick up litter where we can.

“So we’re just getting the Sea Shepherd name out there, telling people what we do and organising two beach cleans. Afterwards we will go through what we’ve collected and dispose of it properly.”

Sea Shepherd UK invited people to take part in the clean, which ran between 2pm and 5pm.

The charity also hosted talks on its marine conservation projects, Sorted Surf Shop spoke about the environmental impacts surfers face, and Oly Rush from Project Planet shared the story of his swim around the Cayman Islands.

Bournemouth Echo:

Oly Rush said: “A lot of people don't know where to start there are so many problems in the world at the moment and I think plastic pollution can be a great place to start because we can see the problems it's causing, it’s there on the beaches, its washing up on the shores and if we start there, it will really help other areas of our lives as well.”

Food was also provided by café Earthling to those who took part in the clean.
