A CLUB is being started in Boscombe to make sure children have access to food during the summer holidays.

Churchill Gardens is set to welcome a new breakfast club from today (Monday) ensuring children have “access to a healthy breakfast to start each day”.

The club will run every morning throughout the school summer break, serving food and hosting activities including crafts and yoga.

The project was launched by community group The Friends of Churchill Garden, and at a time where rising costs are seeing many families struggle.

Kelly Longrigg, vice chair at The Friends of Churchill Garden, said: “I realised a lot of the kids are finishing for the summer and may not have access to the food they need.

“Everyone is struggling, and everyone is really feeling the pinch now.

“Everyone is welcome, we’ve not put any restraints on it, and we’re not doing any means tests.

“If you’re in the park and you want to have breakfast, just join in.”

Members of The Friends of Churchill Garden have launched a Go Fund Me page to raise money for the Breakfast Club, so that it can continue to run throughout the summer.

The fundraiser reads: “Funds will allow us to purchase breakfast food and drinks for the whole summer and resources and equipment that the children can use during the sessions. If we are lucky enough to raise beyond our target, any additional funds will be put towards future events we organise.”

“This summer, we are determined to create a daily event where local children and young people can gather, socialise, eat, play, and make the most of their holiday.”

As someone who grew up in the area, Kelly is determined to improve Churchill Gardens, and is confident that the Breakfast Club will be a step forward for the community.

She said: “It’s recognised area of deprivation.

“We want to make the park into the nice place that the community deserve.”
