POLICE have carried out a welfare check on a dog after it was rescued from a car on the hottest day of the year.

Officers from North Dorset rescued the dog after receiving several calls from concerned members of the public.

In a social media post on Tuesday, a spokesperson said: “Some thoughtless individual decided to go shopping and leave their dog in car.”

Giving an update on Wednesday, North Dorset Police said a check had been carried out to ensure the dog’s living conditions were in order and its owner had been reminded of their responsibilities.

A spokesperson said: “Following on from yesterday's emotive post about one of the team rescuing a dog in a car.

“That officer decided it would be prudent to conduct a welfare check. After all one mistake could reveal further problems.

“Making sure its living conditions were all in order and the points raised yesterday were taken on board.

“The owner was also informed of their responsibilities under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 & that any further reckless acts could result in a prosecution. One remorseful owner and one happy dog.”

Police in Purbeck were also called to a dog left in a car on Tuesday with the window left open by about four inches.

Anyone who sees a dog in a hot car is urged to dial 999.
