Litter was left piled up by the side of beach bins in Christchurch - despite the actual bins being emptied.

The rubbish - a mixtures of litter, food packaging, used disposable barbecues and bottles - was piled by the side of two bins at Steamer Point in Christchurch.

The rubbish had been there for two days - since the weekend.

It comes after residents hit out at the amount of litter strewn on the beaches across Bournemouth and Poole after thousands of people visited over the weekend.

Piles of rubbish were left on the sand after beachgoers flocked to make the most of the warm weather.

A picture taken on Saturday by Mark Tyrrell showed discarded bottles, wrappers, cans, coffee cups and carrier bags.

A BCP Council spokesperson said: “The area at Steamer Point is serviced daily by our waste collection teams throughout the summer and our teams will clear the excess waste immediately.

Please leave your rubbish and litter and place inside our bins. If they are full, find another empty bin or take it home with you. The community can report an overflowing bin by visiting our website.

“We have made enquiries as to why the excess rubbish was not removed when the bins were collected and will monitor the situation to prevent any reoccurrences.”
