ORGANISERS of this year’s Sandpolo are said to be “really excited” to return with the event for its 15th year.

Preparation is underway for the 2022 British Beach Polo Championships at Sandbanks, and this year gives even more reason to celebrate.

Sandpolo’s director, Johnny Wheeler, said: “It’s really exciting for me and all the different people that have been involved in it other the years. I don’t think we ever imagined 15 years from the first event.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun. Everyone’s really excited.”

The championships, otherwise known as Sandpolo, will be hosted from Sandbanks Beach across Friday and Saturday.

Ticket holders are invited to watch fast-paced professional polo from a picturesque beach arena, before heading to the Sandpolo beach parties in the evening.

They will also have a food village to enjoy, with Asian food, Thai, pizza, burgers, paella, buffets, Caribbean food, and an extensive vegetarian menu.

Johnny said: “We haven’t moved much from the original concept of sport on a beach.

“It provides an opportunity for people to enjoy a day and night-time activity.

"It’s a gradual transition to the party.”

Johnny said: “I’m really grateful to the council and the whole area for supporting this event for this long.

“People do anticipate it each year and they buy tickets well in advance - they are really looking forward to it. It’s become one of the main sporting social events in the area.”

Last year’s Sandpolo was held in September, after Covid restrictions forced it out of its usual July spot.

Johnny said: “We were so lucky last year in that everyone was prepared to wait until September.

“We had good weather and it was really hot that week. It was great, but it didn’t feel quite the same. But now we’re happy to be back to the July slot.”
