TWO Wareham pensioners have raised over £2,000 by cycling from Land’s End to John o’ Groats on a tandem bike.

Bob and Sue Richardson, who are in their seventies, embarked on the epic 2,000km adventure on their trusty tandem ‘Daisy’ to fundraise for Poole Hospital’s dermatology department.

The couple wanted to thank the team after Bob, who was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, recovered in their care.

Bob and Sue said: “The department really have no idea how much they helped Bob to be positive when his diagnosis. He was at an extremely low ebb and feared the worst, but their care and compassion was exemplary.”

After suffering through endless hills, gale-force winds, and punctures, the couple arrived at John o’ Groats on June 8 - after beating their original fundraising target of £1,000.

The couple added: “There we were, two naive pensioners on a quest to prove that age is just a number. We achieved that, and we are proud. If we have inspired others, then that makes everything worthwhile.”

Justine Ray, lead nurse on dermatology, celebrated Bob and Sue as an inspiration and thanked them for their incredible donation.

She said: “All the staff work hard to ensure patients receive the highest quality care and the best reward for us is to see them living a full life and enjoying time with their family and friends.”
