SHAKE and Stir Vintage Music Festival returned to Fisherman’s Walk in Southbourne, this weekend, with its biggest event to date.

The free event featured retro music, vehicles, dancing, fashion and more from the 1920s to the 1970s.

Event organiser Mandy Payne said: “It’s just a really happy event, we’ve got more traders than we’ve ever had before so we’ve actually got 98 traders and we’ve got a nice mixture of crafts and potteries and drinks, and on the bandstand we've got some amazing musicians.

“We’ve got a star, Johnny Earl who is doing book signing, he used to sing with the Jordanaires who Elvis used to sing with.

“For the first time ever we’ve also had a lot of children's entertainment: vintage swing boats, rides and food

“For it to be Fisherman's Walk, a park that looks very little on a normal day, it's now alive and buzzing and it's just a very happy event.

“It puts Southbourne and Bournemouth on the map for the vintage event by the sea and it's unique and special.”

Bournemouth Mayor Robert Lawton attended the event as it got underway.

Nicole Richman, who was involved in organising the festival said: “The event kicked off at 11 today, the Mayor of Bournemouth opened up the proceedings.

“We've already got lots of people in the park already watching the Lindy Hopper Dancers and we’re expecting between 25 to 30,000 people here today.

“It’s definitely warmer than it was last year and we've got no rain forecast for the rest of the day so we’re planning on it being super busy.”

A number of people showcased their vintage cars, scooters and clothing.  Rod Hall, the owner of a 1965 scooter said: “A few of us came here about five years ago in 2017 and did a little modern rocker thing.

“Then somebody told me about it coming up this weekend, so I emailed the organisers and offered our services and she said yeah you can bring a few of your scooters here, we’d love it.

“We’re all Bournemouth and Poole based, our group is called the Grumpy Grandads Dorset.

"We’re just having fun, most of us are retired although we’ve got one lad who's 17 and he's got a grumpy grandads badge and underneath it says carer.

"We have a lot of fun and we meet at various places across Dorset. We’re going to be doing another static display on the 9th of July at Poole Goes Vintage.”
