IDEAS described as “inspiring” have been proposed for the temporary use of Bournemouth’s abandoned Winter Gardens site as summer approaches.

In February this year, businesses were invited by BCP Council to pitch ideas for temporary use of the site as plans for a permanent £150 million redevelopment stalled.

The former concert venue site has sat empty since it was fully demolished in December 2021 and planning permission has been granted to Bournemouth Development Company (a joint venture partnership between BCP Council and Muse Developments) for the redevelopment.

However, as reported the BDC said it was reviewing some elements of the scheme to ensure it meets the needs of the community.

Earlier this month, BCP Council leader Drew Mellor defended the decision to pause the project while wider redevelopment plans for the area are considered.

In the meantime, it is still hoped temporary uses for the town centre site will come to fruition as the council’s portfolio holder for development, growth and regeneration says “exciting” proposals are being awaited.

Councillor Phil Broadhead said: “The Winter Gardens site forms part of Bournemouth’s main visitor destination, and we know how much interest there is in any future development that takes place in this area.

“We are determined to take forward plans that incorporate our unique identity, making sure we create a place where people and businesses want to be and that gives local people somewhere they can feel proud of.

“Whilst those long-term plans are developed, and to make the most of this prime town centre site we have approached the market inviting potential hospitality, retail and leisure providers the opportunity to pitch their ideas for the temporary use of the Winter Gardens site.

He added: “We have had a positive response with some inspiring ideas coming forward that will give people a more enhanced experience, provide a much-needed vibrant offer, and attract people into the town. We are now awaiting detailed proposals from the market before moving to the next stage when we will be able to reveal exciting plans for the temporary use of the site.”

The £150 million Winter Gardens development has planning consent for more than 350 flats, 600 parking spaces and new leisure and retail space.
