A MOTHER of two is calling for a new pedestrian crossing along a busy Bournemouth road and says there is no safe place for children to cross.

Kate Salmon has started a petition to provide a pedestrian crossing along the B3063 Charminster Road.

In a bid to make the route to school safer and appealing, Ms Salmon, a Moordown Green Party campaigner, has called the council to ask for a pedestrian crossing and hopes other residents will also voice their opinions.

Ms Salmon said: "It concerns me, many children walk to school that way. They have to take a chance crossing the busy main road.

"I think it’s a large part of why so many parents seem to drive their children to school round here.

"There is no safe place to cross Charminster Road for quite a long stretch, from south of East Way north to Castle Lane."

Ms Salmon said a number of schools would benefit from a crossing.

The suggested location for the new crossing is the row of shops (including West Way Fish & Chips) at 569-575 Charminster Road.

The petition has received over 100 signatures.

A BCP Council spokesperson said: “The council receives many requests for new pedestrian crossings and has a prioritisation process in place designed to identify those that will achieve the most community benefit and which can then be recommended for delivery using available budgets.

"Many factors are considered, however key factors include the numbers of pedestrians crossing, the volume of traffic and difficulty crossing, safety, and the degree to which the crossing is identified as a key route, including any relationship to routes to a school(s)."

The spokesperson added: "Depending on the result of that assessment, any crossing facility may be considered for implementation in future years.”

Kate formally submitted the request in writing on Wednesday, June 15.
