A NEW waste service strategy has been published for the New Forest with an aim for greater sustainability.

New Forest District Council’s (NFDC) new waste strategy details how future changes to the recycling and rubbish service will reduce waste and improve recycling.

The strategy will go through the following approval process:

  • June 16: Reviewed at the council’s environment and sustainability overview and scrutiny panel
  • July 6: Reviewed at Cabinet
  • July 11: Final decision made by council

The new service will include weekly food waste collections, more plastics collected for recycling, and meet upcoming government legislation, which includes collecting food waste separately.

Changes to the service are not expected to take place until 2024 onwards.

Cllr Steve Davies of NFDC said: “Our district is a special place and to protect it, we must take action to reduce waste, increase what we recycle and improve our service for residents.

“We also need to tackle climate change by reducing our carbon emissions and increase our recycling rate to achieve the UK national target of 55 per cent by 2025. In 2020/21, our recycling rate was 34 per cent and put us at 174 out of 216 councils in England.”
