A COLOMBIAN-born NHS worker has taken it upon herself to do a wing walk on a biplane to raise money for the NHS University Hospitals Dorset charity.

Luisa Ballesteros, who moved to England in 2007, will take to the skies and complete the daring stunt on Friday, July 1 in Wiltshire.

Luisa has worked at Poole Hospital since October in the neurovascular clinic, and said the UK is “blessed” to have the NHS.

She told the Echo: “What the NHS does for us is a great job.

“Now that I am working for them I can see how everything works.

“We are not lucky to have the NHS; we are blessed.”

She added: “If you go to other third-world countries, or even Australia or North America, and you want an ambulance, you have to pay a lot of money for it to come.

“But here we are blessed to have the service where you call for an ambulance and it can arrive within an hour at no cost.

“People in the UK don’t realise how lucky they are to have this and it is very important that we say thank you.

“If we let the NHS get privatised, we will suffer a lot. Even though it can take hours to be seen sometimes, we are still so lucky to be able to walk in and not be charged.”

“I want to do this wing walk as a way of saying thank you to everybody in the NHS for what they have done for us.

Luisa will be reaching speeds of up to 120mph, but that doesn’t faze her having done a wing walk before when her boyfriend gifted her with a ticket to do so for Valentine’s Day.

“Wing walking is the most amazing thing that you can do. I’ve done skydiving and paragliding, but wing walking is the best one. I’m not scared.”

One of the consultants she works with joked with her saying she “wasn’t normal” for doing a wing walk.

She added: “They say all the time that I am crazy.”

Donations to Luisa’s wing walk can be made on her JustGiving page.
