A person was rescued by the RNLI after getting into trouble in the sea off Bournemouth Pier.

The person was kept afloat by two life rings through by passers by on the pier when the crew from Mudeford reached them on Thursday morning.

The team were notified at 6.20am by Solent Coastguard to a perosn in trouble to the east of the pier.

A spokesperson for the RNLI said: "Although not cold at 13 degrees, the winds were fairly strong.

"The Mudeford Servant lifeboat proceeded at speed and arrived on scene nine minutes later, by which time the casualty was being kept afloat by two life rings, thrown by passers-by on the pier."

Once in the lifeboat, no immediate medical attention was required so the lifeboat landed on the beach, and passed the casualty into the care of South West Ambulance Services.

Helm, Simon Barnett, said: "It was fortunate that the passers-by knew what to do.

"They didn't panic or jump in the water; they sensibly threw a buoyancy aid and called 999."
