A BEACH pathway in Mudeford said to be “overwhelmed with sand” is causing frustration amongst residents.

Residents are calling for the clean-up of a legacy path which runs from Avon Beach to Mudeford Quay, and provides access to Gundimore beach.

The path, which was put in as an Olympic legacy ahead of the 2012 games, has become swamped with sand, making it difficult for prams and wheelchair users to pass.

Councillor Lesley Dedman is one individual to be fighting for the clean-up. She said: “This path has been totally left to go to rack and ruin.

“It is a good path, hardstanding, and gives disabled folk and pushchairs access to our sandy Gundimore beach.”

Cllr Dedman has raised the issue with BCP Council on multiple occasions but claims nothing is being done to combat it.

She added: “I’ve been pushing to get the path swept for two years.

“Whenever I ask when the path will be swept, the answer is ‘what path?’

“They’re almost saying ‘what Christchurch?’ There’s an element of dismissal.

“It’s extremely annoying when you think that it was put in as a legacy for the people of Christchurch.

“To us at Gundimore, it is a constant reminder that we are now but a distant outpost of Bournemouth.”

Cllr Dedman has even taken members of BCP Council to the beaches in question, showing them the sand covered path in a push for action.

She added: “I feel like I’m knocking my head against a brick wall. It’s soul destroying.

“Residents are expecting something to be done but I can’t explain why its not being done because I just don’t know.”

Cllr Philip Broadhead, cabinet member for development, growth and regeneration said: “The exposed Gundimore Legacy Path has been covered by wind-blown sand for a number of years.

"Whilst we are always looking into effective ways of regularly clearing the compacted sand, we are mindful that this may cause structural damage to the crushed limestone pathway.

"Although this situation is being looked at and monitored, it is worth noting there is a fully accessible adjacent tarmac footpath running from Mudeford Quay down to Gundimore and Avon Beaches."
