MEMBERS of the public are being invited to an information event over controversial plans to transform several roads in Poole.

BCP Council will be hosting an information event for residents regarding active travel work plans for sections of Ringwood Road (B3068) in Oakdale, which will be transformed with the introduction of protected cycle lanes, narrower traffic lanes, wider pavements and safer pedestrian road crossings.

They form part of a 27km sustainable travel route linking Poole town centre with Ferndown and Wimborne – one of six routes within the Transforming Cities Fund.

In order to provide the space for the proposed two-way cycle lanes and pedestrian improvements, the council is proposing the introduction of double yellow lines outside dozens of properties – resulting in the removal of approximately 30 parking spaces.

The introduction of these restrictions is subject to the outcome of a separate legal process, and it is expected the Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) will be published in summer 2022.

Some residents have expressed concern over the plans. In March, hairdresser Amanda Carey told the Echo how the loss of parking spaces outside her salon in Ringwood Road could “kill off” her business and that residents had not been informed of the plans until after the consultation ended.

Surveys have been undertaken reviewing the parking levels in the area of Ringwood Road over one week in April 2021 and again this year at the same morning, lunchtime, and evening periods.

According to BCP Council, the average parking space occupancy across all roads surveyed was 47 per cent in April 2021, and 45 per cent in April this year.

A spokesperson said: “These results suggest that there is available parking in adjacent and nearby roads to accommodate the loss of the parking spaces.”

The data did, however, show the parking spaces outside Amanda’s Quick Snip Barbers salon were among the most regularly used in the area at more than 76 per cent usage in April this year.

The public drop-in information event is taking place on Wednesday June 8 from 3.30pm-7.30pm at TS Dolphin Sea Cadet Hall in Ringwood Road, Poole.
