THE FINAL elements are being completed on active travel works to transform Evening Hill in Poole after five weeks of disruption.

Council plans to adapt the section between Shore Road and Sandbanks Road at Evening Hill with an established cycle lane, widened footpath, zebra crossing and more will be finished in the coming weeks – slightly later than planned.

The replacement of 43 on-street parking spaces at Evening Hill to accommodate the plans had drawn criticism from some residents, however BCP Council’s consultation process showed two-thirds of those asked who travel through the area for work and leisure were in favour of the transformation.

Asked to provide an update on the works, a council spokesperson said: “Following a six month consultation process, the changes will help to create a safer space for people to walk and cycle, as well improving access for those coming to enjoy the popular Evening Hill green space overlooking Poole Harbour.

“They will also contribute towards meeting our declared climate emergency by supporting more sustainable journeys through the area.”

Crews have widened the existing footpath in Alington Road, while a brand-new zebra crossing has been constructed in Shore Road. The carriageway has also been resurfaced.

The separated cycle lane “has proven to be very popular” according to council planners and is now a permanent addition to Evening Hill since its installation.

“We are now in the process of completing the final elements, such as lighting, to make sure that this new design remains a safe and beneficial addition to the Evening Hill area,” the spokesperson added.

“We’re also putting back the cycle wands and we expect to finish all these works within the next two weeks.

“These improvements will help people journeying to Evening Hill on foot, bringing them right to harbour view seating areas. It will make it easier for those who come to the area to enjoy water sports and those with mobility issues to access this cherished spot safely, providing good visibility and improving safety.

“Plans for three disabled parking bays on Alington Road are also underway.”

Work began on April 25 and were slated to finish at the end of May, however it is expected they will instead be complete within the first two weeks of June.
