A BANNER welcoming Ukrainians to a town has been torn down in an act of criminal damage, police say.

Officers are appealing for witnesses after a banner with the Ukrainian flag and the word 'welcome' written on it was torn down in Sturminster Newton on Friday, May 20.

On Monday, Sturminster Newton Town Council said that there were a few incidents of vandalism in the town over the past weekend.

The council said as a result of the damage caused, it was forced to close toilets at Ricketts Lane Recreation Ground and on Station Road.

Photos published by the town council show the welcome banner on top of a bin.

A spokesman for North Dorset Police said: "Criminal damage to a welcome Ukrainians banner was torn down at about 9pm on Friday, May 20.
