A BRAND-new Domino’s takeaway will open in Ringwood town centre today after permission was granted by New Forest District Council.

The international pizza delivery and takeaway chain submitted plans in October last year to move into a unit in Southampton Road, just off the High Street, formerly occupied by Edinburgh Woollen Mill.

Residents offered no formal objections to the plans which will see the takeaway operate every day between 11am and 11pm, generating a number of full-time and part-time employment opportunities.

In her report, district council case officer Vivienne Baxter said: “This part of Ringwood town centre includes a variety of uses including shops, cafes and office use. The loss of this particular unit would not create a concentration of non-retail uses nor lead to an unacceptable change in the retail character of the area.”

The initial plans raised some concerns from district council conservation officers as the existing shop front was proposed to be replaced with an aluminium one. Responding to the feedback, applicants Hala Group adapted plans meaning the existing timber framework has been retained and refurbished instead.

Ms Baxter added: “The applicant has worked with the local authority to achieve a scheme which would not adversely affect the character or appearance of the area and would maintain the residential amenities for those living nearby the property.”

Prior to the final decision, Ringwood Town Council recommended the plans be approved.

Deputy Mayor of Ringwood Cllr Philip Day said: “Had the application threatened Ringwood’s heritage or been inappropriate for some other reason, the council would no doubt have recommended refusal.

“It is gratifying to see an empty unit brought back into use and we wish it every success as we would with any new business coming to the town.”

After the Echo reported on the plans when they were still in the application period, residents generally responded positively on social media with many tagging family and friends and making comments such as “We had better start going to the gym”.
