A FACTORY fire which led to residents being urged to keep their windows and doors closed is now "under control".

Crews were called this morning to a fire in a factory at Station Road in Gillingham and the fire service advised people to avoid the area if they can.

Earlier today, a spokesman for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are currently dealing with a fire in a factory at Station Road, Gillingham.

"Please avoid the area if you can. There is some acrid smoke so local people are advised to keep doors/windows closed as a precaution."

At around 11.15am, the fire service said the incident was "under control".

A spokesperson said: "We're likely to be on scene for another couple of hours, but the industrial estate is now accessible.

"Local people should continue to keep doors/windows closed if concerned."

Station Road was blocked in both directions between High Street and Le Neubourg Way.
