A CHERRIES fan was given even more to celebrate after her partner proposed at the crucial match which saw AFC Bournemouth promoted to the Premier League.

Luke Fletcher took the opportunity to propose during the pitch invasion that followed Cherries' 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest last night, a result which saw them seal promotion.

The Branksome resident took Katie Warren, a lifelong Cherries fan, into the centre circle and got down on one knee to pop the question.

Luke said: “I got down on one knee and proposed and she said yes.

Bournemouth Echo:

“She didn’t see it coming. She was a bit emotional. She was shocked which is exactly what I wanted.

“She knew that I was going to propose to her at some point in the near future, but I wanted to give her that shock element and surprise.”

The 40-year-old, who is in fact a Southampton FC fan, told the Daily Echo how he seized the opportunity to make Katie’s night even more special. He said: “She goes to every game. I only managed to get a ticket because her friend who usually goes with her was on their honeymoon. So, I got tickets for last night and tickets for the Millwall game.

“I planned to propose before her birthday in June, so I had a couple of dates in mind.

Bournemouth Echo:

“I was hoping the result would go the way I wanted. It was dependant on Bournemouth winning and there being a pitch invasion.

“Last night kind of worked out perfectly.”

Ahead of the proposal, Luke had searched for his friend amongst the pitch invasion to ask him to photograph the moment. He said: “I had a mate there, but I couldn’t find him.

“I’m a local football referee and I saw a fellow referee and I said ‘can you take a few photos? I’m about to propose to the Mrs!’

“We got some pictures. I wanted to capture the moment.

“Loads of people saw it. There were a few congratulations and cheers.”
