A MAN who admitted he had been given "one chance" by a judge has now been jailed for committing offences within weeks of avoiding an immediate prison sentence.

Joseph Nabil received a 15-month suspended sentence shortly before Christmas after pleading guilty to a raft of crimes, including dangerous driving, four counts of making off without payment and four counts of theft.

Nabil, aged 46, was back before the court on Friday, April 29, for two offences of theft and one of attempted theft, which he admitted.

Judge Stephen Climie, who jailed the defendant for 17 months, said: "You will remember what was said on the last occasion. Commit further offences, you have to go to custody."

Nabil also received a three-year criminal behaviour order, which banned him from entering any Waitrose or Sainsbury's stores in Dorset, any retail premises in Wimborne Road, Bournemouth, and Castlepoint Shopping Centre.

He must also not remain in any Dorset shop, commercial or hospitality premises if asked to leave by staff and not enter any forecourt or retail premises of a petrol station save to purchase fuel.

The judge concluded it was appropriate to impose the full suspended sentence, with a further two months consecutive for the latest offending, which took place in January and February.

The court heard Nabil, of Wimborne Road, Bournemouth, had also failed to maintain contact with the probation service.

Robert Grey, representing the defendant, said there was "good intention to try from the outset" of the suspended sentence.

Following his release from custody in December, the defendant had no housing support and he had "nowhere to go" leaving him street homeless.

Prosecuting, Richard Martin said Nabil attempted to steal scales from Sturtons & Tappers in Winton on January 6.

The defendant went on to steal £267.99 worth of alcohol from Waitrose in Winton on January 10 and £932.35 of beauty products from the same store on February 8.

As reported, the dangerous driving involved in the suspended sentence saw Nabil lead pursuit at more than double the speed limit in a 40mph.

His other offending saw him repeatedly take hundreds of pounds of fuel without paying for it.
