A CHALLENGE to make Dorset litter free has begun this month.

The Litter Free Dorset challenge has returned this May and will see 177 Dorset residents taking part in litter picking across the county.

This year’s project will see people of all ages working to clean up litter in areas across Dorset ahead of the Summer.

Participants have opted into a range of challenges, including 10 litter picks throughout the month or 10-minutes of litter picking a day. They have also had the option to invent their own challenges.

The litter picking is also a chance for participants to provide important data to researchers about the amount and types of plastic collected.

Bournemouth Echo:

Amanda Arnold, a researcher for the Preventing Plastic Pollution project, said: We are really pleased to be supporting the Litter Free Dorset Challenge again in 2022.

"The more information gathered by volunteers on the types and quantities of litter in our environment, the better our ability to identify where it is coming from and the more likely we can create lasting solutions to stem the flow of plastics entering our rivers and seas.”

Fundraising has been taking place for Litter Free Dorset, and money raised will go towards their other litter clearing projects, including 2023’s Litter Free Dorset challenge.

To spread the message and support challengers, Litter Free Dorset have created a Facebook group for participants to share their progress and receive support from each other as well as the public.

Sophie Colley, Litter Free Dorset’s coordinator, said: “Taking part in this year’s litter challenge? Share your finds and photographs to social media and tag in Litter Free Dorset and the Preventing Plastic Pollution project for a chance to be featured on our social media. Use the hashtag #LFDChallenge to make sure we don’t miss your posts.

"Good luck with your challenge and a big thanks in advance for your litter picking efforts!”
