POLICE are carrying out patrols on Canford Heath in the aftermath of the large heath fire on Saturday April 23.

The 300 metre fire front blazed across Canford Heath for six hours, causing nearby residents to be evacuated from their homes.

Yesterday on Thursday 28, a Poole Police spokesperson said: “We have been carrying out patrols around the heathlands today, truly devastating to see the damage caused.

“Any concerns you may have please feel free to pop down to Asda, Culliford Crescent on Saturday April 30 from 2pm-4pm. Where you will be able to discuss them with the Neighbourhood Policing Team.”

Dorset Police have confirmed that officers from the local neighbourhood policing team will continue to maintain a presence in the area and engage with the local community.

They can be approached by members of the public with any information or concerns.

The huge fire which devastated a large part of Canford Heath is believed to have been started by a human act.

Police say there have been no arrests and their enquiries are ongoing.

In his latest statement, Sergeant Fern Graham, of the Poole Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We are continuing to work with the fire service to investigate the cause of this fire and our enquiries remain ongoing.

“We take expert advice from the fire service and, while they have indicated that their investigations so far suggest the cause of the fire was likely to be an intentional act, we have not been able to fully determine the cause and must keep an open mind at this time.

“We would continue to urge anyone with information as to the cause of the fire, or who may have any footage that might assist our enquiries, to please contact Dorset Police.

“We recognise the significant impact this fire has had on the local community, as well as the wildlife and natural environment of the heath, and we are doing all we can to engage with residents at every opportunity.”
