Drunk man armed with knife and screwdriver goading for fight

Jervaise Kevin Jones called on the victim to “come out and fight me”.

Judge Robert Pawson, who jailed the 31-year-old for 26 months at a Bournemouth Crown Court hearing on April 21, told the defendant “you took leave of your senses”.

The defendant accepted attending the address in Belben Road, Poole, “armed, drunk, seeking to goad the victim into a confrontation”.

Judge Pawson said the offender was stood outside the house for more than 15 minutes on the morning of March 6 shouting various things, including ‘you are no man, you are weak, come out and fight me’ and ‘you are all done for’.

Jones previously pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Prosecuting, Mike Mason said the victim had been asleep in the living room of his family home when he heard a banging on the front door at around 8.20am on the morning of March 6.

The defendant was stood outside shouting and asking those inside to come out.

The victim decided to stand on a fridge in the back garden and told Jones to go away, Mr Mason said.

The prosecutor said while he had his arm out, the victim sustained cuts on his fingers caused by something in the defendant’s hands.

The court heard the victim threw things at the defendant before he ran off from the address.

He was arrested nearby and a search by officers found a small black-handled knife and a screwdriver In interview, the defendant gave no comment to all questions asked.

Mr Mason said a statement from the victim said: “It is scary because if he is happy coming here in the day, what would stop him coming back at night.”

The reason for Jones wanting to confront the victim was not known, the court heard.

Jones had 37 previous convictions from 63 offences, which the judge described as a “pretty appalling record”.

Mitigating, Amber Athill said there was little more to be said about the incident, but added that Jones said he was not holding a knife when the victim was injured.

Prior to his arrest he had been working as a roofer and was on licence from a previous prison sentence.

Ms Athill said since the age of 22 the defendant had spent more time in custody than not.

The father-of-two apologised for going round to confront the victim. The court heard he wanted to move away from Bournemouth after he compeltes his custodial sentence,

“He is trying to work on his issues with alcohol in prison,” said Ms Athill.

Jones, of Belben Road, Poole, was also handed a restraining order not to contact the victim
