SMOKE spread to multiple flats in a Boscombe building due to a fire involving a plant and an incense stick.

Firefighters from Springbourne and Christchurch stations rushed to investigate reports of the incident in Undercliff Road.

No one was inside the flat where the smoke was coming from at around 7.30pm on Saturday, April 9.

The fire crews made entry into the originating flat after seeing smoke logging in the building.

They discovered that the smoke was caused by an incense stick having been placed in a plant pot, which burnt down to the roots of the plant, causing it to smoulder.

The fire was extinguished by removing the plant pot to fresh air and a small amount of water.

A Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Please be careful when leaving your property to ensure that all items are extinguished.

“As well as the potential fire risks, please consider the effect that tying up fire engines can have, and the fact that we may have to cause damage to your property to gain entry and/or cause distress to your neighbours and other members of the public.”
