MORE than 80 visas have been issued across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole to Ukrainian refugees seeking asylum from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Data published by the Home Office and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities revealed that 84 visas have been issued in the BCP Council area under the Home for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme as of April 6.

The wider Dorset Council area has also taken in 66 Ukrainian nationals meaning the county has in total helped 150 people fleeing from the war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian nationals and their family members are allowed under the scheme to come to the UK if they have a named sponsor.

Bournemouth Echo:

The data does not contain the number of visas issued through the Ukraine Family Scheme, which allows applicants to join family members or extend their stay in the UK.

The figures, which rank Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole as the area with the 12th highest number of visas across the UK, come as businesses across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being urged to offer roles to Ukrainian refugees arriving in the area.

Bournemouth Airport, owners of care homes, and other businesses have already offered employment opportunities to people from the war-torn country.

Cllr Karen Rampton, portfolio holder for People and Homes, said: “We know many refugees would love to work, so if you are a business and have a work opportunity, please do get in touch with us and we’ll make sure to pass it on.

“Our council staff and elected members care as passionately about this crisis as many of you do and we are doing our utmost to ensure we provide the very best support and welcome.”
