THE Oceanarium in Bournemouth has announced the death of one of its otters who first came to the centre more than 10 years ago.

Roxy, who had been living with a kidney condition in recent years, was put to sleep after her condition deteriorated.

A spokesperson for the Oceanarium said: “It is with deep sadness that we must announce the passing of our beloved otter, Roxy.

“Roxy had been living with a kidney condition in recent years, which for a long time remained stable with the help of close monitoring and treatment from her keeper and veterinary team.

“Unfortunately, in Roxy's old age, this condition deteriorated to the point where the difficult decision was made to put her to sleep for the sake of her welfare.

“Roxy came to the Oceanarium at just one year old in 2011 when she was paired with her partner of 10 years, Stan, and less than a year later she gave birth to three pups - Mo, Jess and Sophie.

“Roxy was a devoted and protective mother. All those that have worked with her knew and loved her for her very sassy nature and ability to out-smart the keepers.

“We feel privileged to have worked with this beautiful otter and she will be so sorely missed.

“Our remaining otter, Mo, is currently on his own while we are in the process of finding him a mate.

“But don't worry, in the meantime he will be receiving lots of extra attention from his keepers.”
