THREE people were left stranded on a yacht in the waters off Poole after encountering an engine failure.

Poole Lifeboat was launched by UK Coastguard at 4.40pm on Friday, April 1, to a report of a 30ft yacht with three people on board in need of assistance.

Two of the three people on board were reported as feeling ill shortly after an engine failure left the yacht stricken in the vicinity of the ‘training bank’ – a ridge of rocks near Poole Harbour.

An RNLI Poole spokesperson said: “The lifeboat was soon on scene, tow crew were transferred across, [and] they checked the people were okay and assessed the situation.

“The lifeboat crew determined that to remove the yacht from the main channel and get the casualties to safety, the lifeboat would need to take the stricken yacht under tow.”

Conditions were described as “fresh with a cold northly easterly wind”.

Crews then took the yacht to a mooring off Poole Yacht Club where the lifeboat and casualties were met by the Clubs’ launch. Once the yacht was secured to a mooring, the lifeboat crew returned to the station and was once again ready for service by 7pm.
