ONE man’s lifetime collection of hundreds of pieces of silver are going up for sale at a Dorset auction next month.

A vast silver collection, expected to sell for around £20,000 in total, is an offering at the Charterhouse specialist auction of silver, jewellery and watches in Sherborne on May 5.

“It is a fabulous collection of silver amassed over many years,” said Charterhouse founded Richard Bromell.

“He generally scratched his silver collecting itch by buying pieces from auctions up and down the country with many lots coming from Charterhouse.”

The owner, who recently passed away, spent his life working as a policeman. After he retired, rather than locking away villains, he put away silver.

In the collection, which is generally from the 19th century, there are rare castle top visiting card cases, vinaigrettes, hip flasks, cutlery, condiments, vesta cases, novelty items, walking stick handles, sewing accessories and other items.

With estimates from £30 to £500 per item the collection is expected to sell for £20,000.
