THE model of the model of the model town in Wimborne is set to finally go on public display as the tourist attraction opens its doors for the start of its 70th year.

Wimborne Model Town, in celebration of its 70th anniversary, has created a model of the model, and a model of that model which stands at 1/1000th of the actual building.

And the final touches were being made to the new miniature buildings, as the historic attraction opens its doors on Saturday.

Penri Jones, project leader, said: “It’s very exciting, having done this work and got the team together, to show it off to the public, I’m looking forward to seeing their reaction to it.

“It’s a natural compliment having the model of Wimborne itself, then the model of the Model Town and in the end the model of the model of the model.

“We hope it goes down well for the people who come and see it. We’ve had a team of three or four people working on it.”

The Model Town expects around 28,000 visitors this year, who will be able to enjoy the new model, the sensory garden and the mini golf course with three new holes.

Penri continued: “We’ve been talking about it for quite a while. We experimented with 3D printing of the windows of the model itself.

“We’ve tried over the last few years to but some investment back into the Model Town. I think that’s paid off with people coming.

“Even though it’s a 1950s attraction you have to keep moving with the times.

“If we talk to a lot of the shopkeepers, they see the Model Town as being an attractor for people coming here and then spending their money in town.”

As well as the new model, Wimborne Model Town will be celebrating its anniversary with a model day, a vintage day and its usual Folk Festival held each year.

The new model will be laid out behind the Cornmarket area representing the original location of the Model Town between 1952 to 1983.
