A LOOK at ways to drive down flytipping will be undertaken by BCP Council as residents hit out at the increasing issue in the area.

BCP Council has announced it will be reviewing the effectiveness of bins along with ways to drive down fly tipping next month (April).

This comes as residents who live in Churchill Gardens in Boscombe say they have been dealing with worsening fly tipping for years, after communal bins were introduced to the area.

Councillor Nicole Greene, portfolio holder for council priorities and delivery said: “The communal bins at Churchill Gardens were introduced in 2018 as part of The Churchill Gardens Management Plan to replace a larger number of wheelie bins that were having a detrimental effect on the look of the area as well as obstructing pavements.

“We are aware of incidents in which items have been left in and around the bins in Churchill Gardens. We take reports of fly tipping very seriously and alongside our enforcement team WISE, will investigate and where appropriate, prosecute anyone caught illegally dumping waste on public land.

“We are committed to our Cleaner, Greener, Safer campaign and we are reviewing the effectiveness of these bins as well as driving down flytipping across the whole of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, working closely with colleagues as well as the local community to consider all points-of-view.”

Speaking about the council’s upcoming review, a Churchill Gardens resident said: “A review into the situation could take a year or two years, it's not going to solve the problem, we need action to resolve the issues.

“When the bins originally went in, they did consult with residents and residents rejected the plans, we didn't want these bins but they still insisted on putting them in. We didn't have any fly tipping around here before these bins went in.”

The resident says the communal bins have increased fly tipping ‘dramatically’ and caused issues for residents that live there.

He added: “The whole thing just doesn't work and it's just not just this area that's suffering. I know of at least two other areas that have got serious problems with fly tipping.

“If they tackled the fly tipping properly by putting in CCTV and prosecuting people, then the bins could stay.”
