AUTHORITIES are looking into measures that can be put in place to prevent youths throwing rocks from a bridge over a busy road.

Police are working with BCP Council regarding the situation in Poole after vehicles travelling on the A3049 Dorset Way suffered damaged windscreens.

As reported, a man from Upton suffered a crack to the window directly in front of his steering wheel from an incident earlier this month.

Following reports in the Daily Echo, driving examiner Kevin Foster has spoken out after his own “frightening experience” at the same location near the Nuffield Industrial Estate the following day.

The 61-year-old Mudeford resident was driving home from work at around 3.30pm on March 3 when his car was hit.

“I just heard this sudden great bang,” he said.

“I didn’t know what it was at first but then I looked at the passenger side of the windscreen and saw it was cracked.

“It was exactly the same shape as the crack on the other driver’s car and there were no vehicles around that could throw up a stone like that.”

Mr Foster said he did not notice anyone on the bridge as he was concentrating on the road ahead.

He had to get the windscreen replaced through his insurer and he was not able to drive it until it was fixed because it would have been dangerous.

“It frightened me. As a driving examiner I have a lot of experience on the road but someone less competent could have a major crash.

“Maybe police need to have a word with the headteachers of schools in the area. Before long someone will get killed because it is a busy stretch of road.”

He added: “I am observant when I go along there now about what is happening on the bridge. It is on my route home from work.

Asked what he would say to the youths throwing rocks, Mr Foster said: “It is just mindless.

“Think about what you are doing. How would you like it if it happened to your parents or your brother or sister because they will kill someone if they carry on.”

A Dorset Police spokesman said: “We have liaised with a local councillor and the local authority in relation to these incidents and the preventative measures that are in place.

“We will continue to carry out patrols in the area and would again urge anyone with information about those involved in these incidents to contact Dorset Police.”

Bridges over the stretch of the Dorset Way between Tower Park Roundabout and Mannings Heath Roundabout were caged off following incidents involving objects being thrown at vehicles.

The Daily Echo has approached BCP Council, the highways authority, for comment.

Anyone with information relating to the two criminal damage incidents can contact police on 101, quoting 55220035352 or 55220034538.
