A MOPED rider has been recorded on dashcam brazenly running a red light on a busy Christchurch crossroads while carrying a passenger.
At exactly 9pm on Friday, March 18, driver Joshua Heeley was returning home after seeing a friend and approached a set of traffic lights on Barrack Road at the junction with Stour Road.
He told the Echo: “I had just seen my friend who was staying at the Premier Inn down the road and started driving down towards the traffic lights. They just changed to red before I got to them, so I stopped as you do.
“Then this scooter with two people on went right past me and drove straight through. I couldn’t believe it. At first I had to double take to make sure I wasn’t wrong. It’s insane, I hope they had a really good reason for not stopping but I doubt it.”
As seen in the footage, the moped came within a few metres of a passing car heading left on Stour Road. Another car on the other side of Stour Road is seen to slow slightly as the moped passes, before driving on.
Joshua received the dashcam for his recent birthday because he felt he should document the “amount of crazy things that happen” on local roads.
He added: “They could’ve both lost their lives. I feel there needs to be bigger campaigns to stop this sort of thing. Maybe more graphic adverts on TV and social media, a bit like they do with cigarettes to make people really think.”
