A rescue mission was launched after a person was seen to be in difficulties in the sea near Boscombe Pier.
Poole Coastguard, Southbourne Coastguard, Mudeford RNLI and Dorset Police were called to the scene around 9.30pm on Thursday.
A spokesperson for Southbourne Coastguard said: "Once on scene the casualty was in the care of Dorset Police therefore we stood down and returned to station."
