SEVERAL youths were caught attempting to shoplift from a Co-op store in the middle of a police initiative.

A Wimborne Neighbourhood Policing Team crew was stationed at the Co-op food store in Crown Mead on Thursday evening as part of Cops in the Shops – an effort to prevent underage people from purchasing alcoholic beverages.

The crew arrived at the Co-op to be met by six youths attempting to shoplift. An East Dorset Police spokesperson said: “Clearly they hadn't checked our events calendar otherwise they would have known we were coming.”

The youths were not arrested “on this occasion” because they had not completed the offence prior to police intervention as they had not yet left the shop.

However, they have been banned from the store and the incident has been logged should they come to police notice again.
