A 50-metre cordon was put in place in Purbeck and bomb disposal experts called following the discovery of an explosive device.

People were urged to avoid Ferry Road in Studland for their own safety after an old ordnance was found in a pond at around 8am on Tuesday morning.

A Dorset Police spokesperson said: "We received a report at around 8am on Tuesday 22 February 2022 that an old ordnance had been found in a pond near to Ferry Road in Studland.

"Officers are in attendance and a 50-metre cordon has been put in place for the safety of members of the public."

The ordnance was removed by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and the cordon was lifted at around 2.10pm.

It is the third ordnance to be discovered in Purbeck in recent months.

In January, there was a heavy police presence on a beach near the abandoned 'ghost' village of Tyneham when an "old ordnance" was discovered.

Officers attended the scene, along with the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

Then in December, Middle Beach in Studland was shut off by police after a "possible explosive ordnance" was found.

Bomb disposal experts later confirmed this to be a WW1 hand grenade.
