A FATHER of two and trained singer has been crowned Christchurch’s new town crier.
Up against three fierce competitors, Jonny Rayner, 43, won the town crier competition in Saxon Square on Saturday, February 12.
The four hopefuls all battled out for the prestigious role in a competition organised by Christchurch Mayor, Councillor Sue Bungey.
Cllr Bungey said: “I just wanted to bring back the town crier to Christchurch.
“My husband appointed the one 20 years ago and he died sadly last year so I’m really, really pleased that I can continue this and I’m very grateful for all these people coming.”
A large crowd gathered in front of the old Town Hall in the historic square, where the competitors were tasked with bellowing a pre-written speech.

Town criers from across the south west led proceedings, including Chris Brown from Wimborne and Cole Hill, Jacquie Hall of Wareham and town crier for Swanage Andrew Flemming.
The winner was determined by a panel of judges who were scoring each contestant on four categories: diction, clarity, volume and inflection.
Open to all genders and ages, four men took part in the competition including Chris McKinley, 37, Denis Carlton, 65 and Adam Coshan, 49.
Runner-up and deputy town crier, Mr Coshan, said: “It’s time that Christchurch fulfilled the position of having a fantastic town crier for wonderful events."
Taking first place was Mr Rayner, a financial adviser from Friar's Cliff, who was lovingly supported by his wife Melanie and children Elliot, five, and Alice, two.
Mr Rayner said: “I actually felt amazingly comfortable doing it. I thought it would be really difficult on your voice but no it’s fine - it was really good.”
Helped along by his children, Mr Rayner received an adoring ‘aww’ from the crowd as his children ran over to cheer him on moments before his rendition.
Mrs Rayner said: “I’m really proud of Jonny.
“I’m a little emotional because I’m just so proud of him. Clarity was one of the things the judges were looking for in the competition, and Jonny’s voice is so clear and loud because he’s a trained singer.
“I think Jonny's going to be great because he’s such a people’s person and he’s got many years of town crying ahead of him.”
Mr Rayner will be formally appointed Christchurch town crier in time for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
