THE inquest into the death of a 13-year-old boy who died of a suspected drug overdose has opened.

Mehmet Altun died on August 19, 2021, after being found extremely unwell at his address in Colombia Road, Bournemouth.

A short hearing at Bournemouth Town Hall was told Mehmet died of methylenedioxy-methamphetamine toxicity.

The inquest opening heard Mehmet collapsed at his home address, ambulance attended and he was put on life support and taken to Poole Hospital.

Police attended and confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.

Area coroner for Dorset Brendan Allen adjourned the inquest until August 16 this year.

Following his death, a 14-year-old boy from Bournemouth was arrested on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug of class A. He was released under investigation.

Providing an update, a Dorset Police spokesperson said he remains released under investigation.

Paying tribute to her son, Mehmet’s mum Aynur described him as a “pure soul”.

She said: “He treated everybody the way that he wanted to be treated; with respect and joy. Just like any other child, he loved affection and attention.

“Anyone that knew him personally, whether that may be family or friend, would say that Mehmet would never hurt a living being.”

Mehmet, who went to school in Poole and lived in Bournemouth, wanted to work as a barber once he finished his education.
