The first London Marathon was held on March 29, 1981. The men's race was won in 2:11:48 by American Dick Beardsley and Inge Simonsen of Norway who crossed the line holding hands. The woman's race was won by Britain's Joyce Smith in 2:29:57.

The English cricket team withdrew from the Second Test on February 26 after the Guyanese government served a deportation order on Robin Jackman because of his links with South Africa. Jackman's wife was South African and he had spent some time playing for Western Province and Rhodesia.

On April 4, Bob Champion came first in the Grand National with his horse Aldaniti. Bob was 32-years-old and a cancer survivor.

A 23-year-old Steve Davis won the World Snooker Championship for the first time on April 20. Davis went on to win six world titles and dominated the snooker scene throughout the 1980s.

The 100th FA cup final ended with a draw between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium on May 9. Tottenham went on to win the FA Cup for the sixth time with a 3-2 win on May 14.

Liverpool F.C. won the European Cup for the third time on May 27, when they defeated Real Madrid 1–0 in the final at Parc des Princes, Paris, France. Alan Kennedy scored the only goal of the match.
