A DOG owner has urged people to be cautious with what food they are dropping for birds after muesli forced him to rush his pooch to the vets.

Connell Green, 30, from Wimborne, walked his cocker spaniel cross terrier in Redcotts on Thursday.

However, after Merryn jumped up on a plant pot and ate muesli containing grapes and raisins, he had to be rushed to the vets where he was induced and made to vomit.

Dried fruit is highly toxic to dogs.

Connell said: “I walked her down the River Allen and over to Redcotts and let her run around as a lot of dog owners do.

“Among the rubbish bins there was a bit of muesli and I didn’t think much of it.

“There was a plant pot there with dirt and she seemed to be sniffing around. I got her off and we walked to the other side of the field.

“She ran back, jumped on the pot and started eating what was there.

“The thing is with raisins and grapes is for many it effects them quite seriously. It causes kidney failure.”

Connell’s partner Claire, fortunately, is a vet and he messaged her after realising what Connell had eaten.

Claire said to bring Merryn in straight way where he was induced and made to vomit.

Connell added: “It’s one of those things, if I had not noticed it, it could have gone on for a couple of days and then it could be too late.

“We’ve been able to bring fluids and the environment from the vets home and she’s doing well.

“She’s had a rough day and was feeling really awful after vomiting.”

The care worker now urged people to be careful with food they were dropping and wanted dog owners to be cautious with their pets.

“I think the person who is feeding the birds did put it off the ground but it can still be accessible for a dog which is a little bit cheeky.

“Dog owners should keep an eye out and know what your dog is eating.”
