A DORSET man has been fined hundreds of pounds as the result of a prosecuting relating to the use of an e-scooter.

Mark Dean Kennedy, 25, of Christchurch Road Bournemouth, was charged with using an e-scooter on a road or public place without third party insurance in Bournemouth earlier this year.

The case was heard at Weymouth Magistrates Court on Tuesday, December 21, where Kennedy was found guilty in absence.

The court prosecution came after Kennedy was spotted for a second time using the motor vehicle.

After the hearing, Police Constable Dan Gadsden, of Bournemouth East Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “E-scooters have seen a surge in popularity over the last few months, but privately owned e-scooters are currently illegal to use in public spaces. This includes roads, pavements, cycle lanes, beach promenades or any publicly accessible land, such as parks and car parks.

“The local neighbourhood policing team engaged with the individual on a number of occasions and explained the laws surrounding e-scooters. However, they continued to ride in a public space and were subsequently issued with a postal requisition to appear at court.”

The charge related to an incident on October 11 in Bournemouth in Adeline Road when police stopped Kennedy for riding his e-scooter and subsequently confiscated it.

The defendant was fined £660, ordered to pay a surcharge of £66 and costs of £110.

Kennedy also had six points added to his driving licence.
