A POSTBOX in Ferndown has had a Christmassy makeover to kick off the festive season.

The incredible crocheted topper has been placed by an anonymous knitter on the postbox in Ferndown High Street outside of the Post Office.

Keeping the beautiful topper safe, the Post Office staff have been taking it in each night and putting it back each morning.

The decoration has been shared across social media and at the point of writing has gained more than 300 likes and comments from people celebrating the postbox’s delightful topper.

One commenter said: “How lovely! There's some great people out there.”

Another person said: “So lovely. This is like the Banksy knitter.”

Cheering up the community, another commenter said: “I saw it this morning when driving to work and thought that it was so cute.”

The decoration is one of many springing up across the nation as a way to spread some festive cheer.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "Over the years we have enjoyed seeing the various post box toppers that different groups have showcased in local communities across the UK. We first began to see these toppers in 2012 over the festive season, although this soon spread to other key times of the year.

“More recently, we have noticed decorations celebrating various frontline workers during the pandemic - including postal workers. Royal Mail's iconic postboxes are a treasured part of local communities around the country.

“For those who enjoy crocheting, knitting and decorating our post boxes we generally advise them to ensure that the decoration doesn't cause any safety concerns.

“Care should also be taken to ensure the toppers do not obstruct other customers from posting items or our postmen and postwomen from collecting mail.

“We appreciate local people’s passion in Ferndown for creating these works of art and value their interest in Royal Mail."
