THE National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) at Hengtisbury Head has urged the public to follow warning notices on site at the long groyne.

It comes after a person was seen fishing halfway along the long groyne at Hengistbury Head.

The groyne, which was built between 1937 and 1939, has been closed off to the public since 2019.

On Monday, November 22, ground investigation works began to upgrade and repair it.

A spokesperson from the NCI at Hengtisbury Head said: "The warning notices regarding the long groyne at Hengistbury Head have been widely publicised - and they are very obvious at the site.

"However, on Friday, a young man still decided it was a good idea to do a bit of fishing half way along the groyne, on a rising tide with a swell.

"More by luck than judgement he ended up with nothing worse than wet feet - and we had our eyes on him from the Lookout."

The public has been issued the following advice: "Please do not put yourself in danger by climbing onto or fishing from the long groyne, even at low tide, it is unsafe."
