Flies seen flying around Dorset takeaway's kitchen during food hygiene inspection

Amy’s, based on Ivy Cross in Shaftesbury, is a takeaway that sells fish and chips, kebabs, burgers and pizza.

The takeaway, which competes with Domino’s, Greggs, KFC and Family Kebab and Pizza House for diners’ attention in the area, was issued a one-star hygiene rating and ordered to improve following an inspection by Dorset Council on Tuesday, September 14.

A report concluded its ‘hygienic food handling’ was deemed generally satisfactory but ‘cleanliness and condition of facilities and building’ required improvement.

An inspector deemed major improvement was necessary with its ‘management of food safety’ after a raft of issues were found at the Ivy Cross takeaway.

Following the hour-long inspection, the takeaway was ordered to implement a raft of changes including registering the change of ownership of the business and imposing a food safety policy.

The full report, seen by Dorset Echo, noted there were a ‘number of flies in the kitchen’, with the inspector ordering the owner to install electric fly killer units and fly screens.

Multiple areas of the takeaway were found to be in a poor condition, with the report noting the kitchen ceiling was ‘flaking and peeling’ with some work surfaces ‘worn’.

The inspector wrote: “You must register the change of ownership with the council. You must have a food safety policy in place and suitable documented checks.

“Download or purchase a Safer Food Better Business pack.

“The display fridge is operating at 13 degrees. Ensure no high risk ready to eat foods are stored in there for more than four hours.

“The work surfaces in the kitchen are worn and wood is exposed. This needs replacing or resealing. The floor behind counter has gaps that need replacing.

“The ceiling in the kitchen is flaking and pealing. This needs repairing.

“There were a number of flies in the kitchen and no ways to control. Install fly screens at the rear doors and electric fly killer units to control flies.

“The chest freezer has a damaged lid that needs replacing. Clean the debris/food under equipment.”

The owners were approached for comment.
