Looking back to 1974 at the gas works building in Pitwines in Poole which was due for demolition after 50 years of production.
The Bournemouth Gas and Water Company was expanding its operations rapidly to meet the increasing demand for gas from a growing population.
There was no space to expand Poole gasworks at East Quay, the company looked for other opportunities in the area.
The company created a new works at Pitwines and by the end of 1924, some of the buildings were taking shape including the coal store, water gas relief holder, coke bunkers and retort house.
Pitwines Gasworks official started production on the 4th of December 1925 with end products included coal gas, water gas, coke, breeze, ash, steam, electricity, tar, gas oil, asphalt, ammonia, and sulphate.
After 50 years the coming of natural gas made coal gas redundant and the building were demolished. The land was eventually used to house retail stores and a car park.
