AVID surfers will be gathering near Bournemouth pier in protest against the MPs who voted against an environmental bill which would have placed duties on companies to reduce sewage spills.

Thousands reacted furiously after 268 MPs voted to remove a House of Lords amendment which aimed to clean up rivers by placing a new duty on water companies to reduce raw sewage discharges.

Michael Tomlinson MP, who represents Mid Dorset and North Poole, Sir Robert Syms MP, who represents Poole, and Chris Loder MP, who represents West Dorset, all voted in favour of rejecting the proposal.

Simon Hoare, MP for North Dorset, rebelled against the Tory’s and voted in favour of the bill.

And now surfers will paddle out to sea near Bournemouth pier in protest.

Richie Inskip, who organised the demonstration, said: “The bill would have put legal changes in to prevent the dumping of raw sewage in our ocean, the government said you can continue dumping sewage in our water.

“We have an opportunity to influence the voting pattern of MPs, we don’t want to surf in sewage.

“It’s for our kids and dogs, my kids love swimming, there’s an opportunity to make a real difference to our ocean.

“We will paddle out half-way up the pier and make a big circle. We will have a loudspeaker and want our voice to be heard.”

The group are meeting near Bournemouth pier shortly before 12pm.
