BOURNEMOUTH West MP Conor Burns has returned to government in the Prime Minister's dramatic cabinet shake-up.

Boris Johnson is set to chair a first meeting of his new-look cabinet today.

Mr Burns, who resigned from government in May, last year, after an investigation found he threatened a company chairman over a financial dispute with his father, returns to the front benches.

He has been made minister of state in the Northern Ireland Office.

Mr Burns tweeted: "Pleased to return to government as minister of state.

"Looking forward to working with Brandon Lewis (Secretary of State for Northern Ireland).

"Northern Ireland has always been one of the places I consider home.

"Much to do to support and promote this amazing part of our UK and provide security for all people here."

The PM has now completed a shake-up of his cabinet, which has seen a number of high-profile casualties.

Dominic Raab was replaced as foreign secretary by Liz Truss and moved to the roles of justice secretary and lord chancellor.

Gavin Williamson was sacked as education secretary after a difficult 18 months amid the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on education.

Other casualties included Robert Buckland, removed as justice secretary, and Robert Jenrick, who is no longer housing secretary.
